About the Cover Artist
Jim Schulz was born and raised in California wine country. The influence of his Napa roots is highlighted in a recent series of work of abstract vineyard scenes that capture his version of the wine country lifestyle. His art has evolved over the last 15 years from sculptures and small figurines to large ceramic wall pieces. He was not trained as an art student nor did he apprentice under a mentor. In fact, his craft happened rather serendipitously, and he developed it the old fashioned way, through trial and error.
Jim was first exposed to ceramics through a college elective course, a sculpture class. Shortly there after, he came across a flyer advertising a used kiln for sale. He bought it, and quickly immersed himself in the utterly unpredictable art of firing ceramics. After being exposed to the ancient Japanese style of Raku, he realized he had found his true inspiration. Like many artists, Jim is a perfectionist. It is his unusual patience and perseverance that has led him to his own unique styling of clay into a bold and natural, yet imperfect design.
Jim shared his love of clay through a preschool art enrichment program for many years in St. Helena, California. The children had a tremendous impact on Jim and he soon started a family of his own. It is that path that led him to the Lowcountry, where he now lives with his wife and 4 year old daughter. His studio is in his Bluffton home and he is a featured artist at the Picture This Gallery (at Target and Arrow Roads) on Hilton Head Island.
