What is WAHHI?

It is the Womens Association of Hilton Head Island, and it is 1005 members strong. Now in its 61st year, WAHHI started in 1961 as a small garden club with the goal of keeping the plants in Coligny Circle looking neat and beautiful. The organization’s mission no longer involves Coligny Circle, but its most recent kickoff to the 2022/23 year was a major event held at Celebration Park, which is just a stone’s throw from it.

This large, powerful group of women still strive to do good things for the women of the Lowcountry. The goals of the organization are to promote the natural and cultural beauty of the Island, encourage projects which benefit the community, and facilitate communication among the women of the Lowcountry.WAHHI 1122 2

Each year, the organization chooses a theme. Coming out of 2020, last year’s theme was resilience, standing strong in the face of adversity. This year moves the group further from that detrimental Covid year with the theme of Finding Joy. It was this theme that drove the leadership to escalate the opening meeting for this year’s platform. The first meeting of the year has typically involved lunch in a large banquet room, a formal keynote speaker and members signing up for their favorite interest groups. But this year involved the great outdoors, the ocean breeze and the popular dance band Deas Guys, which all added to the joyful vibe of the afternoon.

“There were a lot of firsts at this event,” said Robyn Zimmerman, Program Director for WAHHI. “It was the first time we used QR codes, had food vendors, had a band instead of a formal speaker, had media sponsors and business sponsors. We had a “pink out,” where members went all out for their pink outfits, and there was a contest winner for the best “pink out” wear!” It was an afternoon where the flowers in Coligny Circle were outshone by all the pink radiating from Celebration Park.

It was a special event for the members of WAHHI, where everyone found joy! If you would like to find joy by joining WAHHI, log onto www.wahhi.org. There you can learn more about the organization, find the listing of all 50 interest groups, become a member and learn all about the philanthropy this group has put into the Lowcountry over the past 61 years.

If you’re a woman, and you’re looking to connect with new friends, WAHHI is the organization for you.
