“Adventure awaits,
but only for those who are ready for it!”
– The Uphill Skater –

I love people who have the spirit of adventure and those who are searching for something different to do. Life for people like this can truly be full and challenging. I have sailed many thousands of miles in the ocean, hiked difficult trails, moved into unknown situations and much more. If you think about it, we all dream of having out of the ordinary experiences and adventures. My current adventure is spending two days a week with a six-year-old. What a thrill this has been, believe it or not!

So how can adventure come to you and be a part of your life? Well, since you asked, the most important thing is to be ready. Sometimes adventures come out of nowhere, and if you are not ready, you’ll miss them. It’s also important to be open-minded, open-hearted, and do NOT think of things as being out of range or impossible.

Adventure starts with a mindset. Don’t just wish it or watch it on television. Try to immerse yourself in some sort of adventure as often as you can. I do mean be reasonable, of course. You may not want to go skydiving in Australia, but you may want to go out and buy a bike. There are many super adventures for cyclists all over the place. Think within your current possibilities. or else it just becomes daydreaming.

Next, be ready to actually get up and go somewhere. Are you fit enough? I have seen people on lovely cruises with walkers and oxygen. I also read a story about an obese woman who had what she called “the adventure of a lifetime.” She lost nearly 200 pounds, and for her, that was as much of a life-changing adventure as climbing Mount Everest. What I am saying is to examine not only your budget, but also look in the mirror and see what you need to do to get ready for the adventure of your dreams.

One also needs to be what I call “in charge.” Arm yourself. Find out everything you need to know about where you are going. Ask a friend for advice. Try a travel agent. Check with your doctor to see if it is appropriate. Check out weather and make your wardrobe fit the climate. Book some things in advance. One of the most interesting adventures I ever had was a guided walking tour of the ancient city of Ephesus. It had been a dream of mine to see it, and we were on a cruise that offered a two hour tour. A friend at church told me that he and his wife booked a professional guide. Honestly, I had never done that before. We booked the same guide as our friends had used, and we had one of the most memorable days ever. The heck with the boat tour; we saw it all! Planning pays off because adventure is in the details.

Finally, and this is important, set goals. Do you just want to get out? Do you want something life-changing? Are you fit enough to climb mountains, or can you walk to where you want to be? What do you want to see? What is your dream? Sit down with some books for a while and make your adventure attainable and suited to what YOU dream of. Oh, and don’t forget to have a great time!
