Herstory Elizabeth Millen

Once upon a time there was a girl named Elizabeth Skenes Millen who hopped from job to job. She didn’t really mean to, it just seemed to be the way things always worked. Fortunately for her, most of the jobs she landed were very cool, and she worked hard and learned everything she could at each one of them. No matter what the circumstances were, she grew from all of her experiences. One day, her husband came home and announced that he had been offered a promotion, which required her family to move away from their home in Florence, SC to make a new life on Hilton Head Island, S.C. Although she was not excited about the move, she believed from a young age that everything happens for a reason.

“Now what am I going to do?” she thought, although she didn’t worry. “I’m like a cat,” she would tell friends, adding, “I always land on my feet!” It was at lunch with one of her media reps that the idea of Pink came about. A publisher from whom she purchased advertising pointed out all of her skills and told her that she should start her own publication. “Elizabeth,” he said, “If anyone knows how to publish a monthly periodical, it is you. You should start your own. You know every aspect of the business.”

She was stunned. “Yes,” she thought, I do know my stuff and I am a hard worker.” But although she had great ideas and dreamed of owning her own company, like many women, she had not given herself enough credit. So she lodged that little nugget of encouragement deep within her brain with a vow to never forget.

Exactly nine months after her move to Hilton Head Island, and after accepting yet another job as Director of Marketing, she hesitantly walked into her boss’ office with a letter of resignation. Although she seriously felt as if she might be sick, she awkwardly explained that she had a dream that she must follow. On her last day of work, she left feeling more scared than ever. Not only was the fear of not having a paycheck in two weeks looming over her, but she knew that she had to wake up tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that and figure out what it is she should be doing to get from here to there. And whatever that was, would hopefully work into a successful future.
Eventually, hard work and persistence paid off. Alas, even her husband left his awesome promotion behind to be a part of the business. Not only does the business provide the two of them with a rewarding career, which utilizes their passions daily, but seven other employees are also able to call it home to their careers, where their skills and talents are both challenged and appreciated everyday.

The rest, as they say, is history, and they all lived happily, although very tired and busy, ever after.
