Alece Birnbach
About the Artist
Alece Birnbach
"Sass," her self-titled portfolio, is "Where it's at" for Alece Birnbach (www.alecebirnbach). She is in a life-long love affair with fun. Her signature light, airy and humorous artwork shows off her whimsical and fluid style. Alece creates images that combine high fashion and old-world style-with a shot of fantasy and sarcasm-into everyday scenes that create a tasty and licensable cocktail.
In fact, more than 100 of Alece's images are licensed on a wide variety of products sold across the country at retail locations such as: TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross, Tuesday Morning, Burlington, Loehman's, Concord, Daffys, Forman Mills, Gordmans, Home Goods, and Winners. And in February, her wall canvases will be sold in select Target stores across the country-a licensing coup.
Alece's work spans well beyond highly sought after stationery products, wall canvases and cocktail napkins. Her licensed images also include illustrations from a new book she's co-created Dorothy's Derby Chronicles: The Derby-licious Adventures of Girls Who Like to Hit. The Track (dorothysderby.com). The project is the first-ever roller derby book series for tweens developed by Alece and writer Undertaker's Daughter from the www.rockymountainrollergirls.com" Rocky Mountain Rollergirls.
An action-packed book about a girl's adventures to start a roller derby league at her school, Dorothy's Derby Chronicles brings Alece's illustrations to a new level. A limited palette of hot pinks and blacks create a graphic novel experience. Even before publication, characters of the book have been picked up for posters and rubber stamps.
It wasn't always sass and attitude for Alece. Growing up in rural Colorado, with few playmates, making art was her favorite way to entertain herself. In fact, if you were with her as she worked you'd probably hear her giggling to herself, which is when she knows she's almost there.
But her talents aren't altogether homegrown; Alece graduated from the Art Institute of Colorado and began her career as an art director and then owner of her own ad agency, creating award-winning campaigns based on targeted, strategic planning and branding for more than a decade. She now applies that expertise to her strong, feminine character development.
With professional stints in Los Angeles and Boulder, Colorado, Alece currently lives in Denver with her husband, award-winning photographer, www.allenbirnbach.com Allen Birnbach. While you may find her traveling the globe for inspiration, Alece still finds her creative spirit in Colorado where she began her artistic journey.
