Movies with Heart
In honor of the month of Love, Valentine’s Day, and Heart-filled experiences, I surveyed my friends at CVS on Matthews Drive in Hilton Head, along with a few others to nominate their favorite feel-good films.
In the chaos we live in today, a film that makes you smile, feel good and look at life with optimism is exactly what we need.
What is your favorite? Here are a few surveyed recommendations:
COME FROM AWAY 2021 | Come from Away is a Canadian musical. It is set in the week following the 9-11 attacks and tells the story of what transpired when 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly at Gander International Airport, which is in the small town of Gander in the province of Newfoundland and Lanrador, Canada as part of Operation Yellow Ribbon. The characters in the musical are based on actual Gander residents, as well as some of the 7,000 stranded travelers they housed and fed. The musical has been received by audiences and critics as a cathartic reminder of the capacity for human kindness in even the darkest of times and the triumph of humanity over hate.
JUST LIKE HEAVEN 2005 | Reese Witherspoon, Mark Ruffalo | A lonely landscape architect falls for the spirit of the beautiful woman who used to live in his new apartment. Her workaholic ways didn’t allow for love in her life, but after a tragic accident and a prolonged coma, love may just find a way.
RETURN TO ME 2000 | David Duchovny, Minnie Driver | A man who falls in love with a woman who received his wife’s heart must decide which woman holds his heart.
FIVE FEET APART 2019 | Haley Lu Richardson, Cole Sprouse | A pair of teenagers with cystic fibrosis meet in a hospital and fall in love, though their disease means they must avoid close physical contact.
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE 2006 | Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Alan Arkin |
A family determined to get their daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant take a cross-country trip in their VW bus.
EVER AFTER: A CINDERELLA STORY 1998 | Drew Barrymore, Angelica Huston | The Brothers Grimm arrive at a the home of a wealthy Grande Dame who speaks of many legends surrounding the fable of the cinder girl before telling the true story of her ancestor.
LEGALLY BLONDE 2001 | Reese Witherspoon, Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis | Elle Wood, a fashionable sorority queen, is dumped by her boyfriend. She decides to follow him to Harvard Law School. While she is there, she figures out there is more to her than her looks.
MRS. DOUBTFIRE 1993 | Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan | After a bitter divorce, an actor/father disguises himself as a female housekeeper to spend time with his children held in custody by his former wife.
FATHER OF THE BRIDE 1991 | Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Martin Short | With his daughter’s wedding approaching, a father finds himself reluctant to let her go. The original, starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor (1950), is also fun to rent.
THE PRINCESS BRIDE 1987 | Robin Wright, Fred Savage, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin | While home sick in bed, a young boy’s grandfather reads him a story of a farm boy turned pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.
